The Laboratory of Atmospheric Pollution and Environmental Physics (AirLab) belongs to the Mineral Resources Engineering Department, Faculty Engineering, University of Western Macedonia, Greece.

The aim of AirLab is:

  • To set the theoretical and laboratory foundations necessary for the most efficient way of teaching the undergraduate and postgraduate courses which are related to the lab’s scientific areas of interest.
  • To promote the applied research, develop and simultaneously apply the scientific knowledge for the needs of society.
  • To create incentives for students to engage in scientific research and offer employment prospects to graduates.
  • To transfer the technical know-how, provide consulting services, disseminate the information and knowledge to the public, institutions, private and public enterprises in the field of environmental and energy management and technology.

AirLab is in charge of the following undergraduate courses in the Mineral Resources Engineering Department:

  • Physics for Scientists and Engineering (1st and 2nd semester)
  • Air Pollution and climate change (6th semester)
  • Air Waste Management Technologies - Dispersion Models (9th semester)

AirLab participates in the organization of postgraduate program of Studies as well as in the dissertation of doctoraltheses, either independently or in cooperation with other laboratories of National and Foreign Universities.

AirLab conducts research in the following main areas:

  • Atmospheric Boundary Layer
  • Atmospheric Pollution and Dispersion
  • Fugitive dust emissions and dispersion
  • Decision Support Systems for Air Quality Management
  • Measurements and Analysis of Wind Potential

Most of the research funds of the Laboratory originate from national and European competitive programs. The results of our research efforts are published in peer-reviewed journals and in the proceedings of national and international conferences.
